Eiichi Hayashi
He started playing the saxophone in a brass band during his junior high school years.
He turned professional at the age of 17 and trained in big bands and R&B bands.
In 1980, he joined the Yosuke Yamashita Trio as a plus one, and a live album was released from their 1983 European tour.
In 1990, he formed his own band MAZURU, released his first leader album of the same name, and performed at the Nuremberg Jazz Festival in Germany, where it was well received.
To this day, he remains one of Japan's leading alto players and is active in a wide range of fields, and his unique sound is an indispensable presence in the Shibuya Takeshi Orchestra, the Itabashi Fumio Band, and Ishiwata Akihiro Marhaus, among others.
GATOS Meeting, which features three-horn arrangements of his own songs, released an album of the same name in 2012. He also continues to pursue Hayashi-ryu improvisation and Hayashi-ryu monk through various sessions.
In July 2015, he led the 13-piece Eiichi Hayashi MAZURU Hokkaido Orchestra, the culmination of his career as an arranger, and was greeted with rapturous applause by a large audience said to have been made up of free jazz fans from all over Hokkaido.
Representative albums include de-ga-show, Monk's Mood, Oto no Tsubu, MAZURU no Yume, Mori no Hito, Birds and Bees, Tsuru, and Yutoumugai, among many others.
