He became a professional at the age of 17 and trained in big bands and R&B bands. In 1980, he joined the Yamashita Yosuke Trio as a plus one, and his performance from the 1983 European tour was released as a live album. In 1990, he formed his own band MAZURU, released his first leader album of the same name, and performed at the Nuremberg Jazz Festival in Germany, where it was well received. To this day, he remains one of Japan's leading alto players, and his unique sound is an indispensable presence in the Shibuya Takeshi Orchestra, the Itabashi Fumio Band, and the Ishiwata Akihiro Marhaus. In 2012, GATOS Meeting, which features three-horn arrangements of his own songs, released an album of the same name. He also continues to pursue Hayashi-ryu improvisation and Hayashi-ryu monk through various sessions. In 2015, he led the 13-piece Eiichi Hayashi MAZURU Hokkaido Orchestra, the culmination of his career as an arranger, and was cheered by a large audience that was said to have been made up of free jazz fans from all over Hokkaido.
